GSM-7
160 / 153 charsPlain English, digits, common punctuation
Unicode
70 / 67 charsDevanagari, emoji, most accented letters
How it works
- 1GSM-7 (plain English text) fits 160 characters in a single SMS.
- 2Once a GSM-7 message needs more than one segment, every segment, including the first, holds 153 characters.
- 3Any character outside the GSM-7 alphabet (Devanagari, emoji, most accented letters) switches the whole message to Unicode.
- 4Unicode allows 70 characters in a single segment, then 67 per segment once it splits into more than one.
- 5Extended GSM symbols, ^ { } [ ] ~ | and \, cost two units each, even though they look like one character.
Keep messages plain and GSM-7-only when you want to stay in one segment, a single emoji or Devanagari character switches the whole message to Unicode and drops your limit from 160 to 70.
Best for
